In the Highways-Industrial complex that defines Wisconsin state planning and transportation spending, rail projects are squeezed to death over an alleged lack of financing, but highway expansion - - called 'investment' - - is never subjected to the same dollar due-diligence.
Here is a perfect example, but remember that Gov. Walker's budget proposed eliminating all state aid to transit systems:
In our broke state, the same anti-rail Team Walker officials and toadies who killed Amtrak between Madison and Milwaukee by cooking the numbers, who blew up commuter rail in Southeastern Wisconsin, who are blocking Milwaukee urban rail and wiped out regional transit agreements legislatively are about to commit the state to 25 years of spending to make 140 miles of State Highway 41 into a more truck-friendly segment of Interstate Highway - - yet no one in this definitive story says one word about the cost.
Which could be $20 million. Without long-term maintenance, patrolling, and plowing thrown in.
I guess that's chicken feed to the Walkerites.
More Wisconsin examples in the billions of dollars, here.
