Jeff Wagner, AM 620 WTMJ's afternoon righty talker, spent time in his first hour continuing to plumb the tragic Kilbourn Reservoir Park murder story he has exploited since it was first reported for more political mileage.
With continuing disclosures that the alleged killer has mental illness, and was off his medications - - thus wiping out Wagner's first claim that the killing was reminiscent of "wilding" by teens after the July 3, 2011 fireworks, and proof of Mayor Tom Barrett's civic disinterest - - Wagner switched gears and now is using the crime to push the notion that society needs to be protected from the mentally-ill and who do not take their medication.
A caller said she agreed because the "common good" mandated such coordination, but - - oops - - that began to take the discussion where a good righty does not want it to go: to the common good, which sounds awfully socialistic, don't you think?
Fast on his feet, Wagner swung the discussion back to the safe territory, as he said the lack of monitoring wasn't in the individual patient's interest, either.
It was an ideologically-confused, internally-contradictory segment, and Wagner finally let it go, but not before he made clear he wasn't for trampling on people's rights.
"I'm a civil libertarian at heart," he told us.
Good to know. The ACLU should send him a membership application.
